Robolectric 4.16.1 is a minor release that fixes some issues when Robolectric is used for Android Platform development. Most notably, it is updated to support the deletion of FingerprintManager in the Android Framework, as well as some improvements to the VirtualDeviceManager shadow.

Robolectric 4.16 supports Android Baklava (SDK 36), and you need to use JDK 21 if running tests with SDK 36 target. It also removes support for Android L (SDK 21 and 22).

One exciting new feature is native resources (ResourcesMode.NATIVE). Note this is currently only available in SDK 36.

  • BREAKING: Rename ImageRequest and ImageLoader dispatcher methods to coroutineContext. For instance, ImageRequest.Builder.dispatcher is now ImageRequest.Builder.coroutineContext. This was renamed as the method now accepts any CoroutineContext and no longer requires a Dispatcher.
  • Fix: Fix IllegalStateException: Reading a state that was created after the snapshot was taken or in a snapshot that has not yet been applied which could occur due to a race condition.
    • NOTE: This reintroduces a soft dependency on Dispatchers.Main.immediate. As a result you should re-add a dependency on kotlinx-coroutines-swing on JVM. If it's not imported then ImageRequests won't be dispatched immediately and will have one frame of delay before setting the ImageRequest.placeholder or resolving from the memory cache.

    • Fix issue in scrubbing mode where image updates would only take effect when the user "stops scrubbing" (#2815).
  • Session:
    • Fix bug where ForegroundServiceStartNotAllowedException wasn't propagated across thread boundaries in case the application thread is not the main thread (#2499).

Verdict: changes requested — do not merge as-is. The grouped bump is correctly scoped (all 44 are within-major minor/patch updates, only gradle/libs.versions.toml + owncloudComLibrary/build.gradle touched, no hidden major — the real major bumps are split into their own PRs), but CI is red for a real, hard incompatibility, not flakiness:

  • Run Android Unit Tests and Run Android Instrumented Data Tests both fail at :owncloudApp:checkMdmDebugAarMetadata (build never reaches the tests).
  • Root cause (CheckAarMetadata):
    • androidx.browser:browser:1.10.0 requires Android Gradle plugin 8.9.1+
    • androidx.core:core / androidx.core:core-ktx:1.19.0 require AGP 9.1.0+ and compileSdk ≥ 37
  • This project is on AGP 8.7.2 / compileSdk 36, so these transitive AAR-metadata requirements cannot be satisfied. (Several of these "minor" bumps are very large within-major jumps, e.g. androidx.core 1.10.1 → 1.19.0, browser 1.5.0 → 1.10.0, material 1.8.0 → 1.14.0, media3 1.1.1 → 1.10.1 — they pull in toolchain requirements ahead of this repo's setup.)

Requested change: the group cannot be merged at these targets on the current AGP/compileSdk. Either:

  1. bump AGP (≥ 9.1.0) and compileSdk (≥ 37) first in a separate, deliberate PR, then rebase this group; or
  2. exclude/cap the offenders (androidx.core, androidx.core-ktx, androidx.browser, and any other dep that raises the AGP/compileSdk floor) from this group so the remainder can go green, and handle those in a dedicated upgrade PR.

Passing checks: Detekt, Validate strings, Validation, semantic-commit validation, CLA. CodeQL skipped.

Mergeability note: GitHub reports merge state UNKNOWN; regardless, required test checks are failing so this is not mergeable until CI is green.

Changelog: n/a — dependency-only bump (build config / version catalog), no changelog fragment required.
